You decide- total removal Vs. cover-up
Safe tattoo removal has two options: Cover-ups require fewer sessions and less time; Complete pain-free tattoo removal is possible with more time and sessions. Contemplating cover-ups? We can work with your tattoo artist to remove only the minimum required areas in just 2-3 sessions.
The Removal Timeline. How Many Sessions To Remove A Tattoo?
Estimating the number of laser tattoo removal sessions required is the second step in tattoo removal. Apart from using the Kirby Desai Scale to calculate the precise number of sessions required, we also consider the size, color, layering, density, and location of your tattoo.

Frequently Asked Questions
MetaDerm offers the most effective tattoo removal services in Chennai. With numerous patients
We are certified tattoo removal specialists, having treated numerous patients over the years. We were the first to incorporate pico lasers into Dermatology services in Chennai. Today, we remain at the cutting edge of technology with both the Picoway & Picosure Pro systems.
It is subjective. Home tattoos can be removed in just one or two sessions, cover-up takes about 2-3 sessions, and complete removal will take longer. The Kirby Desai scale enables us to estimate the exact number of sessions required.
Picoway is a great laser for treating black and red tattoo ink, and Picosure Pro with the 755 wavelength is the best for other tattoo colours, including greens and yellows.
At MetaDerm, using two lasers helps us provide you with the best results possible without any compromise.
Using 2 lasers enables us to treat different skin colours.
- Picosure Pro laser for lighter skin and is best suited for green, black, blue, and purple ink.
- Picoway laser for all types of skin, and works better for red & orange ink.
Mixed pastel colours with reflective pigment and metal oxides. Most tattoo artists mix colours to give an eye-popping effect. Unfortunately, such tattoos with mixed colors are harder to remove and will also require more sessions.
Tattoo removal is done over multiple sessions, and the Kirby Desai scale helps in estimating the exact number of sessions. It includes the following key elements:
- Colours: Ink is made from varying compounds. Inks used by professionals are very different from the inks used by amateurs and are harder to remove. Of all colours, blank is the easiest to remove owing to its small size.
- Ink Quantity: There are 4 categories - Amateur (letters, words, or small symbols), Minimal (one colour, simple design), Moderate (one colour, complex design), and Significant (multicoloured, complex design). This is classified further based on the density of ink and the surface area.
- Keloid History: Overproduction of collagen leads to scarring. The collagen surrounds the ink particles, which reduces the effective penetration of lasers and immune system cells. Thus, it requires more time to clear the tattoo ink.
- Skin Type: The Fitzpatrick skin type is a rating scale based on skin colour. It rates skin from Type I to Type VI. The Asian skin is usually rated at a 3 or 4. Clearing is considerably faster for lighter skin tones.
- Location: While tattoos in the head and neck area can be removed easily, ink on your hands and feet takes longer.
- Tattoo Layers: If you have tried to cover up your old tattoo with a new one, your artist would have used darker inks. This will take longer to remove.
- Immune System: How well the body gets rid of the ink depends on each individual’s immune system.
An individual’s immune system is the biggest variable when it comes to professional tattoo removal. It is determined by the individual’s genetics and influences how effectively the body gets rid of the ink.
